A self-confident, optimistic, empathic go-getter with a fearless attitude is what I would call a Woman. In our Indian culture, women have been at the forefront of knowledge and taken part in many debates related to the shastras, as written in many of the Upanishads. Gargi, Maitreyi, and Lopamudra, to name a few, have contributed to Vedic knowledge.
Our culture did take a backseat in the recent past, where women were considered inferior to men. However, in the present, many women have broken free from these shackles of bondage and asserted their rights to make a change in society. As a student of science, I take great pride in the achievements of Indian women, be it in the space sector, industry, medical, dental, and allied fraternity, defense forces, or journalism, to name a few. They are now taking the lead in every aspect of society. Government initiatives, corporate policies, educational reforms, and a generational shift in societal attitudes are shaping an ecosystem of support and opportunity for women.
Trailblazers in Science and Innovation
In the present scenario, women like Tessy Thomas (Missile Woman of India), Nandini Harinath (Rocket Scientist), Gagandeep Kang (Fellow of the Royal Society), Kalpana Chawla, and the list is endless, have made remarkable contributions. Dr. Anandi Gopal Joshi (1865–1887) was the first Indian woman to earn a medical degree in Western medicine. She crossed the borders of our country, facing much opposition. Since then, many women doctors, dentists, and allied scientists have emerged as a force in our country.
Government Initiatives Empowering Women
This has all been made possible by the initiatives taken not only by the leaders of our country but also by the change in society. Many government initiatives like the SERB POWER Research Grants, Women Scientist Schemes, UGC Post-Doctoral Fellowship for Women Candidates, WIDUSHI (Women’s Instinct for Developing and Ushering in Scientific Heights & Innovation), and grants in biotechnology sciences, to name a few, are empowering women to gain new heights.
Unique Strengths of Women
The empathy, righteousness, ability to think in a calm and rational manner, and multitasking ability are some of the advantages that women have been endowed with. Let us celebrate the women in our lives not just on Women’s Day but every day.
Conclusion
Women have always been a driving force in research and innovation, from ancient times to the modern era. Their contributions have shaped our world and continue to inspire future generations. Let us honor and support women in their endeavors to create a more inclusive and progressive society. Happy Women’s Day!
